With only 4 episodes left to go in the final season ever of Lost, I thought i’d count down the top 10 best episodes of this season thus far. As the season has progressed towards the end it’s definitely gotten better. So here it goes, starting out with number 10..
10.)EPISODE 4- The Substitute
We learn about Locke’s flash-sideways life as an employee of at the box company and see not-Locke recruit Sawyer to his side.
Oh no, I’m sure you did meet Jacob. At some point in your life, James, probably when you were young and miserable and vulnerable. He came to you, he manipulated you, pulled your strings like you were a puppet. And as a result, choices you thought were made, were never really choices at all. He was pushing you, James. Pushing you.. to the island.
-Man in Black
9.)EPISODE 6- Sundown
In the flash sideways we learn about Sayid’s life as his brother is actually married to his love Nadia. In an attempt to help his brother financially Sayid kills Keamy and his men who are after his brother Omer.
For years, he has been trapped, but now Jacob is gone, he’s free. This man will not stop until he has destroyed every living thing on this island. He is evil incarnate.
Meanwhile on the island not-Locke issues an ultimatum to the others remaining at the temple: join him or die. The temple is attacked by the smoke monster and we see the survivors escape. We also see Jin revealed in the flash-sideways.
8.)EPISODE 1- LA X
We become aware of the flash-sideways as in one timeline the passengers land safely at LA X. In the other timeline they remain on the island as they rush to the Other’s temple to save Sayid’s life.
You were wrong! That’s the damn Swan hatch–blown up just like we left it before we started jumping through time! You said we could stop it from ever gettin’ built! That our plane would never crash on this island!
Why it’s great? We find out the the smoke monster is the Man in Black (not Locke).
7.)EPISODE 5- Lighthouse
We find about Jack’s relationship with his son in the flash-sideways. Hurley leads Jack to the lighthouse and it’s revealed that Jacob has been watching Jack all along.
Haven’t lived in that house since I was a kid. He’s been watching. The whole time. All of us. He’s been watching us. Hurley, where’s Jacob?
Why it’s great? ..We find out how Jacob has been watching the survivors all along, even before they arrived on the island.
6.)EPISODE 10- The Package
Jin and Sun aren’t a married couple in the flash-sideways, yet a couple deeply in love hiding it from Sun’s controlling father. She accomponies Jin on a business trip to LA. Jin is held up by Keamy who is after the 25k. Meanwhile on the island, Sun becomes unable to speak english after hitting her head while running from not-Locke.
Went back out to your garden to see if he was there. He wasn’t. I found this. That’s one stubborn tomato. Guess no-one told it it was supposed to die.
-Jack talking to Sun
Why it’s great..We become aware of Richard’s plan to stop not-Locke from escaping by blowing up the plane. We become aware of Desmond’s return to the island.
5.)EPISODE 12- Everybody Loves Hugo
Things start to click for Hugo in the flash-sideways when he sees Libby and begins to remember his love for her from being on the the island. Meanwhile on the island Michael appears and tells Hurley that Richard and the others’ plan to blow up the plane isn’t a good idea. Llana goes the same way of Arzt and accidently blows up after mishandling the dynamite. Hurley blows up the Black Rock before Richard and crew are able to take the rest of the dynamite. This leads the group to split up as Jack chooses to follow Hurley to talk with not-Locke and Richard and Ben go looking for something else to blow up the plane.
A lot of crazy stuff’s been happening… I kind of wish I could talk to you about it in person. A lot of people come to talk to me after they’ve… you know… gone. It would be nice if you did too.
-Hugo talking at Libby’s grave
Why it’s great..We see Hugo finally reunited with Libby in the flash-sideways. We also find out that the whispers are of those who can’t move on. (like Michael)
4.)EPISODE 7- Dr. Linus
In the flash sideways we See Ben as a high school teacher. Amazingly his student(who he tudors) is Alex from the Island. When Ben becomes aware of the idea that he could blackmail the principal into giving up his job, he begins to work towards the goal of getting the job for himself. Ben later backs out of the plan when he realizes the principal could ruin Alex’s chances at getting into a good college. Meanwhile on the Island, Llana finds out Ben had killed Jacob and forces him to dig his own grave. When given the chance to go back with Locke Ben is chased down by Llana who ultimately takes him back into her camp.
I watched my daughter Alex die in front of me. And it was my fault. I had a chance to save her. But I chose the island over her. All in the name of Jacob. I sacrificed everything for him. And he didn’t even care. Yeah I stabbed him, I was… so angry…confused…I was terrified that I was about to lose the only thing that had ever mattered to me – my power. But the thing that really mattered was already gone. I’m sorry that I killed Jacob. I am, and I do not expect you to forgive me because…I can never forgive myself.
Why it’s great..We see how Ben cares for Alex in the flash-sideways as a fatherly figure and we perhaps see a more human side of him than ever before. Jack also convinces Richard that he’s meant to stay alive.
3.)EPISODE 9- Ab Aeterno
We finally see how Richard came to the Island. While this episode is almost entirely a flashback despite the beginning in the end it really tells Richard’s truly tragic love story. We find Richard arriving on the island with a shipwreck in chains after he is jailed for accidently murdering a doctor who refuses to give him the medicine needed to save his wife’s life. We see the Man in Black try to use Richard to kill Jacob who eventually takes Richard into his care and gives him a job as his messenger. By the end, through Hurley’s power to see and communicate with the dead, Richard is briefly reunited with his wife.
That man who sent you to kill me believes that everyone is corruptable because it’s in their very nature to sin. I bring people here to prove him wrong. And when they get here, their past doesn’t matter.
Why it’s Great? ..we see how Jacob brings people to the island because he believes people have good in them no matter what they’ve done in the past. We again see the man in black as Jacob’s nemesis. Plus Richard’s story is great.
2.) EPISODE 13– The Last Recruit
It’s appears this is the true beginning of the end. In the flash-sideways Jack meets Claire and finds out she’s his sister. By the end Jack is tasked with fixing Locke who was previously hit by Desmond outside the school. Jack recognizes Locke. We also see Sawyer and Miles working as LA detectives again. Sawyer questions Kate who realizes Sawyer doesn’t want anyone to know he was in Australia. Miles and Sawyer also arrest Sayid for the homicides. Sun wakes up in the hospital with Jin by her side and realizes she and the baby will be alright despite a gunshot wound.
John Locke was the only one of us that ever believed in this place. He did everything he could to keep us from leaving this island
Meanwhile on the island we see Locke’s plan to escape with the crew begin to unravel as Sawyer takes the boat with Jack, Kate, Hurley, Claire, and the pilot to Hydra Island. Before arriving, Jack leaves the boat and returns to the island thinking, “the island isn’t done with us yet”. When the rest arrive on Hydra Island they’re informed Sawyer’s deal with Widmore is off and they’re held at gunpoint. We see Jin and Sun finally reunited as Jack returns to the Island only to be greeted by Not-Locke.
BTW…I have a feeling Juliet is the mother of Jack’s child in the flashsideways..
Why it’s great? ..because we learn that perhaps Jack is the real candidate and finally filled with purpose again, the same purpose he lacked in Lighthouse. We also are lead to believe the Sayid didn’t really kill Desmond as not-Locke ordered.
…AND THE BEST EPISODE OF THIS SEASON THUS FAR…
1.) EPISODE 11- Happily Ever After
So here’s what I believe is the best episode of the new season so far. Widmore’s return to the island means Desmond has returned against his will. Widmore forces Desmond to a radation test using the old Dharma equipment on Hydra Island. In the flash side-ways we see Desmond working for Widmore, whom he surprisingly has a great working relationship with. Desmond’s task is to pick up Charlie(who was recently arrested at LA X for drugs) and bring him to perform with his band Driveshaft at a gathering for Mrs. Widmore(we previously know her as Eloise Hawking).
I’m talking about spectacular, consciousness-altering love. Do you know what that looks like?
Things click in the flash-sideways and we see the characters really beginning to remember their past lives on the island. This first starts with Charlie remembering his love for Claire on the island when he’s being resuscitated by Jack in the airplane. Charlie forces Desmond to wreck the car in the water and for a moment we see that Desmond remembers the island while trying to save Charlie. We are eerily haunted and thrilled by the familiar season from Season 3’s Through the Looking Glass as we see Charlie’s hand with, “Not Penny’s Boat” written on it”. This then sets up Desmond on his task to find the rest of the passengers to try to make them remember as well.
Why it’s great? ..because we see things starting to click with the passengers in the flash-sideways as they really begin to remember.
